Stavanger is one of Norway’s most visited cities. It is the fourth largest city in Norway, yet Stavanger feels like a small town with charming small, wooden houses along the harbor and and cobble-stone streets. To visit, there are international flights to Stavanger arriving daily at the Stavanger Airport in Sola. The airport is about 15 kilometers from center of Savanger so most visitors hire a car, take a bus, or take a taxi to and from the airport.
For visitors arriving on flights to Stavanger there are nearly 30 hotels in the city. The Myhregaarden Hotel is the only five star hotel in Stavanger, but there are quite a few excellent three and four star hotels to choose from.
Stavanger has a long, rich history. The cathedral in the center of the downtown area dates back to 1125 AD. The small, intimate cathedral is one of the main sights in Stavanger. Other popular attractions include Stavanger’s archaeological museum detailing Norwegian history and The Iron Age farm. This is a reconstruction of a farm built in the Iron Age.
Since Stavanger is the oil capital of Norway, many of the visitors arriving on flights to Stavanger are associated with the oil industry. The discovery of oil in the North Sea has meant a lot to the development of Stavanger and in Stavanger’s Oil Museum visitors can learn about the history of oil exploration, how oil is produced and what the life is like for an offshore oil worker in Norway.
